The Grise Cup comes across as classical because of its relief with burn marks. "Grise" in French means gray, and it has a more subdued feeling than white. There is an unaffected, lovely and even graceful charm to this cup, which leads to such popularity. This cup is made using the "kohiki" technique, a traditional Japanese technique where the clay is covered with a layer of white powder-clay before transparent glazing. It results in a unique grayish white in soft hue.
